FL-9 at Night

One of my first flash lit night shots - this was a test we did at the Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum in Willimantic, and was lit by painting it with a Vivitar shoe mount flash (equiv. to a Canon 550EX). This shot would be the genesis to the annual Night Photo Shoot we've been putting on there for a decade now. Taken May 5, 2004 on Fuji Provia 400

Sleeping Giant

A former New Haven EMD FL-9 sits quietly on the grounds of the Connecticut Eastern Railroad Museum in Willimantic, CT as the crescent moon sets in the background. This was taken during a test night shoot. It was the first time I had used studio monolights to light a night scene - this was using two lights - one nearly face on, and the other broadside. Traditionally we had used a portable Lumedyne flash, which was used to evenly light the scene. This method enabled the use of shadows to add some depth, and preserve the night "feel"

New Job on a Foggy Night

On January 6, 2008 the Providence & Worcester Railroad ran the newest job - symbol NR-4 - between Plainfield and Willimantic, CT. The train would handle customers on the Willimantic Branch, along with the interchagne traffic with the New England Central Railroad. Here NR-4 pauses in Willimantic yard so the crew can swap ends for the return trip back to Plainfield.

Painted by the Light
